Holset Air Compressors Master Repair Manual – 012-003   Air Compressor Carbon Buildup

NOTE: The illustrations shown are of the SS model single-cylinder air compressor. Differences in procedures between the other air compressor models will be shown where necessary.

Shut off the engine.

WARNING  Wear appropriate eye protection and face protection when using compressed air. Improper use can cause bodily injury from flying debris and dirt.

Open the drain cock on the wet tank to release compressed air from the system.

Remove the air inlet and outlet connections from the air compressor.

Measure the total carbon deposit thickness inside the air discharge line as shown.

NOTE: The carbon deposit thickness must not exceed 1.6 mm [0.06 in].

WARNING  The air discharge line must be capable of withstanding extreme heat and pressure to prevent personal injury and property damage. Refer to the manufacturer’s specifications.

NOTE: If the total carbon deposit thickness exceeds specification, remove and clean, or replace the air discharge line. Refer to the manufacturer’s material specifications.

Continue to check for carbon buildup in the air discharge line connections up to the first connection, or wet tank.

Clean or replace all lines and fittings with carbon deposits greater than 1.6 mm [0.06 in]. Refer to the manufacturer’s specifications for cleaning or replacement instructions.

Install and tighten the air inlet and outlet connections.

Close the wet tank drain cock.

Operate the engine and check for air leaks.
