To reduce the possibility of personal injury, do not touch any ignition wires or components while the engine is operating, unless using suitably insulated tools.
NOTE: The ignition coils depicted in this procedure can possibly not be identical to the ignition coils installed on your engine. Although different in appearance, the procedure remains the same.
Disconnect the wiring harness leads from the ignition coil.
Measure the resistance between the positive (+) terminal (2) and negative (-) primary terminal (1). The resistance reading must be less than 1.0 ohm.
Measure the resistance between the positive (+) primary terminal (2)
and the high voltage tower (3). The resistance reading must be within the following range:
Engine
Ignition Coil Type
Resistance
G/GTA855
G19
G28
G38
G50
Barrel type coil
4000 to 7000 ohms
G5.9
G/GTA8.3
G14
KTA19GC
Rectangular type coil
4000 to 12,000 ohms
If any of the resistance measurements are outside of the specified range, the coil must be replaced.
