Water forced into the exhaust by following seas can have catastrophic effects. The exhaust tube should be formed into a swan neck before it exits from the boat, with the top of the neck routed as high above the waterline as possible. An exhaust non-return valve could be fitted near the skin fitting as an alternative or additional precaution.
