Debris seen through the transparent cover on this water strainer will restrict water flow and may cause overheating. To clear it, unbolt the cover, remove the strainer and wash it out.
This mesh strainer can be incorporated in the inlet valve or sited separately to keep debris from entering the system.
Separate water strainer
Mounted about 150mm above the waterline these normally have clear plastic covers so that contamination can be seen and water flow monitored while the engine is running. The strainer element can be removed for cleaning, but not while the engine is running unless a duplicate strainer is fitted.
