System Operation Description:
If any of the following conditions have occurred, the injector trim codes should be calibrated:
• ECM replacement
• Replacement of any of the unit injectors
Also, perform this procedure if a 253-02 is active and “Injector Code” is listed below the active diagnostic code on the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET).
The injector trim files can be found on SIS Web. The injector trim code allows the ECM to compensate for variances in manufacturing between individual injectors. Follow the procedure below in order to gain access to the injector trim files.
A confirmation code is printed on each injector solenoid. The injector confirmation code must be entered when an injector trim file is changed.
Note: Changing the injector trim codes will not increase the power that is available to the engine.
Test Step 1. Record the Serial Number for the Unit Injectors
A. Record the serial number and the corresponding cylinder number for each unit injector that will be replaced.
Also record the injector confirmation code for each injector.
Note: The injector confirmation code is four numbers that are printed on the top of the injector solenoid.
Note: If the ECM is replaced, all of the serial numbers and the injector confirmation codes for the unit injectors must be recorded. The serial numbers for the injectors can be found in “Calibrations” under the “Service” menu on Cat ET. The injector confirmation code can be found on the top of the injector solenoid.
Expected Result:
All of the serial numbers and the injector confirmation codes for the unit injectors were obtained.
Results:
• OK – All serial numbers and injector confirmation codes for the unit injectors were obtained.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
• Not OK – The serial numbers and the injector confirmation codes for the unit injectors were not obtained.
Repair: Remove the valve cover and record the serial numbers, the injector confirmation codes, and the corresponding cylinder number for each unit injector.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Test Step 2. Obtain the Injector Trim Codes
A. Access “Injector Trim Files” on SIS Web.
B. Enter the serial number for the new unit injectors in the search box.
C. Download the injector trim file to the PC.
D. Repeat this test step for each injector that needs to be calibrated.
Expected Result:
All of the injector trim files for the unit injectors were downloaded successfully.
Results:
• OK – Proceed to Test Step 3.
Test Step 3. Replace Hardware
A. Replace the suspect unit injectors and/or the ECM.
Expected Result:
All hardware was successfully replaced.
Results:
• OK – The hardware was successfully replaced.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Test Step 4. Enter the Injector Trim Files into the ECM
A. Connect Cat ET to the data link connector.
B. Turn the key switch to the ON position.
C. Open the “Injector Trim Calibration” in “Calibrations” under the “Service” menu on Cat ET.
D. Select the injector that needs to be calibrated.
E. Click on the “Change” button.
F. Select the appropriate injector trim file from the PC.
G. Click on the “Open” button.
H. Enter the appropriate injector confirmation code for the injector.
I. Click on the “OK” button.
J. Repeat this procedure for all of the injectors that need to be calibrated.
Results:
• OK – STOP.
