To reduce the possibility of personal injury, do not touch any ignition wires or components while the engine is operating, unless using suitably insulated tools.
CAUTION
To reduce the possibility of damage to the spark plug wires, do not pull on the wires. Pull only on the plug boots during removal.
Remove the coil end (A) first then remove the spark plug end (B).
Move the plug wire boot back and forth while pulling upward to remove the wire from the coil and spark plug.
When using solvents, acids, or alkaline materials for cleaning, follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for use. Wear goggles and protective clothing to reduce the possibility of personal injury.
WARNING
Some solvents are flammable and toxic. Read the manufacturer’s instructions before using.
NOTE: A convenient option is an alcohol prep pad that does not contain any moisturizers or other cleaners. Compliant alcohol prep pads are available at many department stores, drug stores, and industrial supply centers.
B Gas Engines: Use rubbing alcohol and a lint free cloth to clean the boot and coil wire.
L10G: Use rubbing alcohol and a lint free cloth to clean the coil wire.
Check the condition of the spark plug wires for damage.
Inspect the spark plug wires and inside the boot for corrosion, evidence of cracking, worn spots caused by rubbing, or arcing evidenced by burnt spots. Replace as necessary.
Avoid contact with the boot to prevent contamination of the grease. Dirt can lead to shortened plug life.
NOTE: Do not overapply the grease.
Apply a pea-sized amount of dielectric grease, Dupont® Krytox 205 – Cummins Part Number 3164956, to the inside of the boot. Spread it around the inner diameter to ease assembly on the plug.
NOTE: A new boot must be installed when new spark plugs are installed or when a boot has been damaged during removal.
Firmly press on the boot until a snap is heard and felt as the boot seats on the spark plug. Install the coil terminal end.
