Preparatory Steps

TOC

NOTE: On wet housing applications, the flywheel housing

must
be removed to replace the rear crankshaft seal.

Refer to Procedure 016-006 in Section 16.

Remove

TOC

Without Removing Rear Cover Plate

  • Drill one or more holes into the rear crankshaft oil seal flange. Use the screw tip attachment to install a slide hammer (similar to Snap-On™, Part Number CJ114) into the drilled hole(s).
  • Remove the seal.
  • Use a magnet to remove any metal shavings from the seal bore or the crankshaft.

With Removing Rear Cover Plate

 CAUTION

Use extreme care when releasing the oil pan gasket from the rear cover to prevent damage to the gasket. If the gasket is damaged, the oil pan must be removed and the gasket replaced. Refer to Procedure 007-025 in Section 7..
  • Remove the four oil pan mounting capscrews that secure the oil pan to the rear cover.
  • Insert a feeler gauge or a shim stock between the rear cover and the oil pan gasket. Move the feeler gauge or the shim stock back and forth to release the gasket from the rear cover.

  • Remove the capscrews from the rear cover, and remove the cover from the crankshaft flange.
  • Remove the seal from the rear cover.

Clean

TOC

  • Clean the gasket surface of the cylinder block and the rear cover.

SMALL | MEDIUM | LARGE

  • Use a crocus cloth to remove any rust or other deposits from the crankshaft flange. Visible scratches can result in seal leakage.
  • Use a clean cloth and a safety solvent, Part Number 3823717 or equivalent, to clean the crankshaft flange and to remove all traces of oil film.

Inspect for Reuse

TOC

  • Inspect the crankshaft for worn grooves in the sealing area.
  • If the wear depth of the groove is less than 0.127 mm [0.005 in] a replacement seal with no wear sleeve may be used if the seal can be installed past the grooved area without scratching the sealing lip.
  • If wear is between 0.127 – 0.762 mm [0.005 – 0.030 in] then use of a wear sleeve is required.
  • If wear is in excess of 0.762 mm [0.030 in] the crankshaft must be replaced, or reconditioned prior to reuse.

Install

TOC

With Removing the Rear Cover Plate

  • Install a new gasket onto the cylinder block.
  • Install the rear cover and the eight capscrews and washers. Tighten the capscrews just enough to hold the rear cover in position.

SMALL | MEDIUM | LARGE

  • Remove the pins from the crankshaft oil seal driver, Part Number 4919705, and use the driver to align the rear cover with the crankshaft.
  • Slide the crankshaft oil seal driver onto the crankshaft and position it against the end of the crankshaft.

SMALL | MEDIUM | LARGE

  • Align the rear cover pan flange such that it is parallel to the cylinder block pan rail within 0.10 mm [0.004 inch].
  • Tighten the rear cover mounting capscrews.
Torque Value:  47  n.m  [35 ft-lb]
  • Remove the crankshaft oil seal driver, Part Number 4919705.

SMALL | MEDIUM | LARGE

  • Trim the excess gasket material from the ends of the rear cover gasket so the gasket is even with or does not extend more than 0.25 mm [0.010 inch] beyond the pan flange.

Seal (No Wear Sleeve) Installation

  • A seal without a wear sleeve may be used on new crankshafts, or used crankshafts having wear grooves less than 0.127 mm [0.005 in] deep.
  • Use the installation sleeve provided with the seal to install the seal onto the crankshaft.

NOTEDo not use any kind of lubricant
to install the seal. The oil seal

must
be installed with the lip of the seal and the crankshaft clean and dry.

  • Push the oil seal over the installation sleeve onto the crankshaft, and remove the sleeve.

SMALL | MEDIUM | LARGE

  • Install the pins into the crankshaft oil seal driver, Part Number 4919705.
  • Use a dead blow hammer, or two capscrews, Part Number S-162-B, to install the seal until the installer is positioned against the end of the crankshaft. Make sure the seal is perpendicular to the crankshaft during installation.
  • Adjusting the depth of the seal in order to avoid an existing groove in the crankshaft from a previous seal is recommended. The seal can be installed to a greater depth by removing the pins from the seal driver.
  • Make sure the sealing lip is not damaged during installation over an existing groove in the crankshaft.

Seal (with Wear Sleeve) Installation

  • Install the wear sleeve onto the seal using the provided plastic guide in the seal kit.
  • Apply a thin layer of sealant such as Dow Corning™ 736, or equivalent, to the wear sleeve and to the crankshaft where the wear sleeve will seat.

SMALL | MEDIUM | LARGE

  • Install the pins into the crankshaft oil seal driver, Part Number 4919705.

NOTE: Make sure the wear sleeve and seal are even before starting installation, or damage to the wear sleeve can occur.

  • Begin seal installation by carefully tapping the outer edges of the installation tool to make sure the wear sleeve starts correctly.
  • Use a dead blow hammer or two capscrews, Part Number S-162-B, to install the seal until the installer is positioned against the end of the crankshaft. Make sure to keep the seal perpendicular to the crankshaft during installation.

SMALL | MEDIUM | LARGE

  • Clean any excess sealant from the crankshaft and seal.
  • Measure the squareness of the installed seal.
  • Set the dial indicator to zero on the inner metal portion of the seal. Measure four locations equally spaced around the crankshaft seal.
  • The difference between any of the four protrusion measurements must not exceed ± 0.51 mm [0.02 in].
  • If this condition is not met, the rear crankshaft seal must be removed and a new seal installed.

Finishing Steps

TOC

  • Install the four capscrews that hold the oil pan to the rear cover.
  • Seal the joint with RTV prior to tightening.
  • Use the following procedure to install the oil pan if it has been completely removed. Refer to Procedure 007-025 in Section 7.

SMALL | MEDIUM | LARGE

  • Tighten one of the 7/16-inch oil pan mounting capscrews on each side of the oil pan, halfway between the front and the rear of the oil pan.
Torque Value:  20  n.m  [177 in-lb]

SMALL | MEDIUM | LARGE

  • Tighten the four 5/16-inch capscrews in the rear of the oil pan in the sequence shown.
Torque Value:  27  n.m  [239 in-lb]
  • Tighten the thirty-two (32) 7/16-inch capscrews in the sequence shown.
Torque Value:  68  n.m  [50 ft-lb]
