Preparatory Steps

  • Remove flywheel. Refer to Procedure 016-005.

Remove

 CAUTION 

Do not use a cutting torch to heat the ring gear. The flywheel can be damaged.

Heat the outside of the ring gear with a heating torch.

Use a blunt chisel and a hammer to remove the gear from the flywheel.

Install

Heat the new ring gear in an oven heated to 316°C
[600°F] for a minimum of 1-hour.

NOTE: Do not overheat the ring gear. The metal hardness will be changed.

 WARNING 

Wear protective gloves when handling parts that have been heated to prevent personal injury.

Remove the gear from the oven and install it on the flywheel before it cools.

NOTE: If an oven is not available, use a heating torch to heat the inside diameter of the new ring gear to 316°C [600°F]. Use a Tempilstik®
crayon, or its equivalent, to check the gear temperature before installing it on the flywheel.
