Engine Coolant Temperature High – Critical
|Fault Code: 151
Engine Coolant Temperature High – Critical. Engine coolant temperature signal indicates engine coolant temperature above engine protection critical limit.
Progressive engine speed increasing in severity from time of alert. If the Engine Protection Shutdown feature is enabled, engine will shut down 30 seconds after red stop lamp starts flashing.
Engine Coolant Temperature
The engine coolant temperature sensor monitors coolant temperature and passes information to the electronic control module (ECM) through the engine harness. If the coolant temperature becomes too high, it will cause a derate condition. If the engine protection shutdown is enabled, the engine will shut down 30 seconds after the red stop lamp starts flashing.
The engine coolant temperature sensor is located on the exhaust side of the engine in the thermostat housing. Refer to Section E for a detailed component location view.
The engine coolant temperature sensor measures the temperature of the engine coolant as it passes through the thermostat housing. This fault code is activated if the engine coolant temperature is above 116°C [241°F].
Possible causes of this fault code include:
- Obstructed radiator
- Plugged vent lines
- Aerated coolant
- Other cooling system failure.
