Circuit Description
The engine coolant temperature sensor monitors coolant temperature and passes information to the electronic control module (ECM) through the engine harness. If the coolant temperature becomes too high, it will cause a derate condition. If the engine protection shutdown is enabled, the engine will shut down 30 seconds after the red stop lamp starts flashing.
Component Location
The engine coolant temperature sensor is located on the exhaust side of the engine in the thermostat housing. Refer to Section E for a detailed component location view.
Shop Talk
The engine coolant temperature sensor measures the temperature of the engine coolant as it passes through the thermostat housing. This fault code is activated if the engine coolant temperature is above 116°C [241°F].
Possible causes of this fault code include:
- Obstructed radiator
- Plugged vent lines
- Aerated coolant
- Other cooling system failure.
