Cause Correction

Ignition timing is incorrectly set.

Check the ignition timing against specifications. Adjust as required. Refer to Procedure 013-042.
 

Intake manifold air temperature is above specification

Refer to the Intake Manifold Temperature Above Specifications symptom tree.
 

Pistons or piston rings are worn, damaged, or not correct

Check the pistons for correct part numbers. Refer to Control Parts List (CPL), Bulletin 3379133 or 4021327. Check the pistons and rings for wear and damage. Refer toProcedures 001-043 and 001-047 in the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual B3.9, B4.5, and B5.9 Series Engines, Bulletin 3666087, Procedures 001-043 and 001-047 in the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual C Series Engines, Bulletin 3666003. Refer to Procedure 7-22 in the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual NT 855 Engines, Bulletin 3810298, Procedure 7-25 in the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual N14 Engine, Bulletin 3666142, or Procedure 7-23 in the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual, K38 and K50 Series Engines, Bulletin 3810432.
