Circuit Description

The timing actuators are commanded by the electronic control module (ECM) to control fuel timing. Each timing actuator is connected to the ECM by a timing actuator (+) and timing actuator (-) wire. An electrical signal is sent to the timing actuator from the ECM on the (+) wire and is returned to the ECM on the (-) wire. Each actuator is normally closed, and it is only opened by an electrical pulse from the ECM during metering.

Component Location

The front timing actuator is located on the fuel control housing. It is the second actuator from the front of the engine. The fuel control housing is located on the intake side of the engine below the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) mixer. Refer to Procedure 100-002 (Engine Diagrams) in Section E for a detailed component location view.

Conditions for Running the Diagnostics

This diagnostic runs continuously when the keyswitch is in the ON position.

Conditions for Setting the Fault Codes

The pulse width modulated (PWM) signal to the actuator is found to be an open circuit, shorted to ground, shorted to a voltage source, or incorrect resistance in the actuator.

Action Taken When the Fault Code is Active

  • The ECM illuminates the amber CHECK ENGINE light immediately when the diagnostic runs and fails.
  • Fueling to cylinders 1, 2, and 3 will be disabled.

Conditions for Clearing the Fault Code

The ECM will turn off the amber CHECK ENGINE light immediately after the diagnostic runs and passes.

Shop Talk

Verify the electronic control module (ECM) calibration is correct. Check the calibration revision history found on QuickServe® Online for applicable fixes to the calibration stored in the ECM. If necessary, recalibrate the ECM. Refer to Procedure 019-032 (ECM Calibration Code) in Section 19 in the corresponding Troubleshooting and Repair Manual for the engine being serviced.

Possible causes of this fault are:

  • An open circuit in the engine harness, connectors, or actuator.
  • A short circuit to ground in the engine harness or actuator.
  • A short circuit to voltage source in the engine harness.
  • Low or high resistance in the actuator.
