Engine Brake Actuator Driver Output 2 Circuit – Voltage Below Normal, or Shorted to Low Source. Low voltage detected at the engine brake solenoid Number 2 signal circuit.

Engine brake on cylinders Number 2 and 3 can not be activated.

Circuit Description

The electronic control module (ECM) controls the engine brakes on cylinders Number 2 and 3 by sending a signal on engine brake signal Number 2 circuit. The ECM will only command the brakes on under certain operating conditions.

Component Location

The engine brake solenoids are located under the rocker lever cover. The 8-pin engine brake connector is located on the intake side of the cylinder head above and forward of the air inlet horn.

Conditions for Running the Diagnostics

This diagnostic runs when the keyswitch is in the ON position and the engine is running.

Conditions for Setting the Fault Codes

The engine brake solenoid pulse width modulated (PWM) signal is not detected to be system voltage when the PWM signal is turned on.

Action Taken When the Fault Code is Active

  • The ECM illuminates the amber CHECK ENGINE light immediately when the diagnostic runs and fails.
  • The engine brake solenoid 2 will be disabled.

Conditions for Clearing the Fault Code

The ECM will turn off the amber CHECK ENGINE light and the fault code state will become inactive immediately after the diagnostic runs and passes. The fault code can also be cleared with INSITE™ electronic service tool.

Shop Talk

Verify the electronic control module (ECM) calibration is correct. Check the calibration revision history found on QuickServe® Online for applicable fixes to the calibration stored in the ECM. If necessary, recalibrate the ECM. Refer to Procedure 019-032 (ECM Calibration Code) in Section 19 in the corresponding Troubleshooting and Repair Manual for the engine being serviced.

Possible causes for this fault include:

  • A short circuit to ground in the engine harness, connectors, or engine brake solenoids
  • A malfunctioning ECM.
