Exhaust gas temperature sensors are used to measure the temperature of exhaust gases for use with the aftertreatment system.
The aftertreatment temperature sensors are located in the aftertreatment system. The aftertreatment diesel oxidation catalyst inlet temperature sensor (1) is located closest to the turbocharger outlet. The aftertreatment diesel particulate filter inlet temperature sensor (2) is located between the aftertreatment diesel oxidation catalyst and the aftertreatment diesel particulate filter. The aftertreatment diesel particulate filter outlet temperature sensor (3) is located in the outlet of the aftertreatment diesel particulate filter.
NOTE: Sensors 1 and 3 are identical sensors and have the same part number. Sensor 2 has a different connector to prevent connecting sensors 1 and 2 backwards during installation. Make sure that sensor 2 (light grey colored connector) is installed in the correct position as shown in the the diagram.
Due to the number of various aftertreatment configurations, this procedure has been written to be generic. Not all illustrations within this procedure will represent the application that is being worked on.
Batteries can emit explosive gases. To reduce the possibility of personal injury, always ventilate the compartment before servicing the batteries. To reduce the possibility of arcing, remove the negative (-) battery cable first and attach the negative (-) battery cable last.
Disconnect the vehicle battery cables. Refer to Procedure 013-009 in the ISB Series 6.7L Engines (CM2100 and CM2150 Common Rail Fuel System) Service Manual, Bulletin 4021578, or the ISC and ISL CM2150 Service Manual, Bulletin 4021569.
If the temperature sensor wire connectors are not connected to the proper locations after installation, aftertreatment system damage can result.
NOTE: A numbered tag can be present on each of the temperature sensor wire harness connections. The canister into which each temperature sensor is threaded can possibly have a welded tag labeling the corresponding number. If either of these markings no longer exists, mark each of the wire connectors prior to disconnecting the temperature sensors from the wire harness.
Slide the locking tab on the top side of the connector to the unlock position.
Press down on the tab near the end of the harness connector where the harness wires lead into the connector.
Pull outward on the connector away from the sensor to disconnect.
The aftertreatment system will stay hot to touch for long periods of time after the engine has been shut down. To reduce the possibility of personal injury, avoid direct contact of hot components with your skin.
Loosen the retaining nut and remove the aftertreatment temperature sensor from the aftertreatment system.
Apply a coating of Loctite® 80209, 51002, 76732 Copper or Silver Grade anti-seize, or equivalent to the exhaust gas temperature sensor threads prior to assembly.
Install the exhaust gas temperature sensor.
Tighten the nut that secures the sensor to the aftertreatment system.
If the temperature sensor wire connectors are not connected to the proper locations after installation, aftertreatment system damage can result.
Make sure the exhaust gas temperature sensors are connected to the correct positions on the OEM wiring harness. Swapped inlet and outlet temperature sensors will result in active fault codes.

Connect the exhaust gas temperature sensor wiring harness connections as noted during removal.
Connect the exhaust gas temperature sensor to the aftertreatment wiring harness.
