Electronic Control System Gas Plus Engines – FAULT CODE 2189

Leaking Throttle Plate

Overview

CODE REASON EFFECT
Fault Code: 2189
PID: S58
SPN: 698
FMI: 7
LAMP: Amber
SRT:

Throttle actuator leaking.

The engine will idle above 900 rpm.

Throttle Actuator Circuit

SMALL | MEDIUM | LARGE

Circuit Description

The electronic control module (ECM) controls the throttle actuator; it is both an input and output device.

Component Location

The throttle actuator is located after the fuel housing and before the intake manifold cover.

Shop Talk

The throttle actuator used for the Gas Plus engines is pulse-width modulated. Leaks, especially missing pipe and cap plugs, after the throttle actuator can also cause this fault. Excessive backfire can cause a bent throttle plate.

Troubleshooting Steps

STEPS SPECIFICATIONS
STEP 1. Check the engine idle speed.
STEP 1A. Check the engine idle speed using INSITE™ electronic service tool. 700 to 900 rpm?
STEP 1B. Check for air leaks in the air intake system. Air leaks?
STEP 1C. Check the throttle actuator. Did actuator pass the test?
STEP 2. Clear the fault codes.
STEP 2A. Disable the fault code. Fault Code 2189 inactive?
STEP 2B. Clear the inactive fault codes. All fault codes cleared?

Guided Step 1 – Check the engine idle speed.

Guided Step 1A – Check the engine idle speed using INSITE™.
