Shop Talk

Possible causes of this code are an ECM internal failure and an uncalibrated ECM. If there are more than three inactive counts, replace the ECM.

Cautions and Warnings

 CAUTION

To reduce the possibility of damaging the new ECM, all other active fault codes must be investigated prior to replacing the ECM.

Troubleshooting Steps

STEPS SPECIFICATIONS
STEP 1. Check the ECM.
STEP 1A. Check if ECM has been calibrated. Calibrated ECM
STEP 1B. Check ECM for active Fault Code 342. Fault Code 342 inactive
STEP 1C. Check for inactive counts of Fault Code 342. Two or fewer inactive counts of Fault Code 342
STEP 2. Clear the fault codes.
STEP 2A. Clear the inactive fault codes. All fault codes cleared

Guided Step 1 – Check the ECM.

Guided Step 1A – Check if ECM has been calibrated.

Conditions

  • Connect all the components.

Action

  • Check if calibration has been downloaded into the ECM.
  • Fault Code 342 will be recorded if new ECM has not been calibrated.
OK NOT OK

Calibrated ECM

ECM needs calibration

Refer to Procedure 019-032.

Guided Step 1B – Check ECM for active Fault Code 342.

Conditions

  • Connect all components.

Action

  • Turn vehicle keyswitch OFF and wait five seconds.
  • Start engine and let idle for one minute.
OK NOT OK

Fault Code 342 inactive

Fault Code 342 active

 CAUTION

To reduce the possibility of damaging the new ECM, all other active fault codes must be investigated prior to replacing the ECM.

Guided Step 1C – Check for inactive counts of Fault Code 342.

Conditions

  • Turn keyswitch ON.

Action

  • Check if there are two or fewer inactive counts of Fault Code 342.
OK NOT OK

Two or fewer inactive counts of Fault Code 342.

Three of more inactive counts of Fault Code 342

Replace the ECM

Refer to Procedure 019-031.

Guided Step 2 – Clear the fault codes.

Guided Step 2A – Clear the inactive fault codes.

Conditions

  • Connect all the components.

Action

  • Erase the inactive fault codes using INSITE™.
OK NOT OK

All fault codes cleared

Troubleshoot any remaining active fault codes.
