M11 Industrial Operation and Maintenance – Engine Starts But Will Not Keep Running

Electronic fault codes are active

For instructions on how to read active fault codes, refer to Procedure 101-007 (Electronic Controlled Fuel System) in Section 1. If fault codes are active, contact a Cummins Authorized Repair Facility.

 

Idle shutdown or PTO shutdown features are activated

Turn OFF the keyswitch for 5 seconds. Turn ON the keyswitch and check fault lamp operation.

 

Fuel level is low in the tank

Fill the supply tank. Refer to the OEM service manual.

 

Air in the fuel system

Check for air in the fuel system. Tighten or replace the fuel connections, fuel lines, fuel tank standpipe, and fuel filters as necessary.

 

Fuel filter or fuel suction line is restricted

Replace the fuel filter. Refer to Procedure 006-015 (Fuel Filter – Spin-on) in Section 4. Check the fuel suction line for restriction Procedure 006-015 (Fuel Filter – Spin-on) in Section 4.

 

Engine-driven units are engaged

Disengage engine-driven units.

 

Fuel is waxing due to cold weather

Check the fuel heater, if installed. Weather conditions sometimes require a fuel heater.

 

Fuel inlet restriction

Check for fuel inlet restriction. Contact a Cummins Authorized Repair Facility.

 

Fuel shutoff valve is closed

Check for loose wires. Check for power to the fuel shutoff valve solenoid.

 

Exhaust system restriction

Check the exhaust system for any restrictions. Refer to Procedure 018-020 (Exhaust System Specifications) in Section V.

 

Fuel grade is not correct for the application or the fuel quality is poor

Operate the engine from a tank of high-quality fuel. Refer to Procedure 018-002 (Fuel Recommendations and Specifications) in Section V.

 

Air intake system restriction is above specification

Check the air intake system for restriction. Clean or replace the air filter and inlet piping as necessary. Refer to Procedure 010-024 (Air Leaks, Air Intake and Exhaust Systems) in Section 5.

 

Engine brake adjustment is not correct

Adjust the engine brakes. Refer to a Cummins Authorized Repair Location.
