Cause Correction

Electronic fault codes active or high counts of inactive fault codes

Refer to Section TF for fault code troubleshooting.

 

Fuel level is low in the tank

Fill the supply tank. Refer to the OEM manual.

 

Battery voltage is low

Inspect the batteries and the unswitched battery supply circuit. Refer to Procedure 013-009 in the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual, Signature, ISX and QSX15 Engines, Bulletin 3666239.

 

Vehicle antitheft feature active

Enter the correct “PIN” or verify the antitheft feature is disabled using electronic service tool Procedure 013-009 in the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual, Signature, ISX and QSX15 Engines, Bulletin 3666239.

 

Starter motor will not engage or is malfunctioning

Replace starter motor. Refer to Procedure 013-020 in the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual, Signature, ISX and QSX15 Engines, Bulletin 3666239.

 

Fuel rail pressure sensor malfunction

Compare the fuel pressure gauge reading to INSITE™ electronic service tool reading. If not within 69 kPa [10 psi], replace fuel rail pressure sensor. Refer to Procedure 019-115.

 

Air in the fuel system

Bleed the fuel system and check for leaks. Refer to Procedure 005-016 in the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual, Signature, ISX and QSX15 Engines, Bulletin 3666239.

 

Fuel shutoff valve(s) closed (electronic fuel system)

Check the fuel shutoff valve and circuit. Refer to Procedure 019-049 and 019-050.

 

Fuel filter or fuel inlet restriction

Check the flow through the fuel filter. Replace the fuel filter if necessary. Refer to Procedure 006-020 in the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual, Signature, ISX and QSX15 Engines, Bulletin 3666239. Clean all prefilters and screens. Check the fuel suction line for restriction.

 

IFSM inlet screen or fuel pump filter screen restricted

Remove and inspect IFSM inlet screen or fuel pump filter screen. Refer to Procedures 005-073 in the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual, Signature, ISX and QSX15 Engines, Bulletin 3666239.

 

IFSM check valves malfunctioning

Remove and inspect check valves for debris and verify proper operation. Refer to Procedure 005-073 in the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual, Signature, ISX and QSX15 Engines, Bulletin 3666239.

 

Fuel lift pump is malfunctioning

Check the fuel lift pump for correct operation. Check the pump output pressure. Replace the lift pump, if necessary. Refer to Procedure 005-045 in the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual, Signature, ISX and QSX15 Engines, Bulletin 3666239.

 

Fuel pump pressure regulators malfunctioning

Check the fuel pump pressure regulators for debris or damage. Refer to Procedure 005-073 in the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual, Signature, ISX and QSX15 Engines, Bulletin 3666239.

 

Keyswitch circuit is malfunctioning

Check the vehicle, equipment, or vessel keyswitch circuit. Refer to Procedure 019-064.

 

Fuel leak

Check the fuel lines, fuel connections, and fuel filters for leaks. Refer to Procedure 006-024 in the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual, Signature, ISX and QSX15 Engines, Bulletin 3666239.

 

Fuel drain line is restricted

Inspect the fuel drain lines for restrictions. Remove any restrictions found. Refer to the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual, Signature, ISX and QSX15 Engines, Bulletin 3666239..

 

Camshaft or crankshaft position sensor or circuit is malfunctioning

Check the camshaft or crankshaft position sensor and circuit. Refer to Procedure 019-038.

 

Electronic control module (ECM) calibration is malfunctioning

Verify the electronic control module (ECM) calibration is correct. Check the calibration revision history for applicable fixes to the calibration stored in the ECM. Refer to the calibration history spreadsheet Click here to see ecm_calibration_rev_history.xls

on QuickServe® Online Internet Website or the INCAL™ calibration CD. Compare the calibration stored in the ECM with the engine rating and the Control Parts List (CPL), Bulletin 4021326 or 4021327. If necessary, recalibrate the ECM. Refer to the appropriate electronic service tool manual and Procedure 019-032.

 

Electronic control module (ECM) is locked up

Disconnect the battery cables for 30 seconds. Connect the battery cables, and start the engine. Refer to Procedure 013-009 in the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual, Signature, ISX and QSX15 Engines, Bulletin 3666239.

 

Moisture in the wiring harness connectors

Dry the connectors with Cummins electronic cleaner, Part Number 3824510.

 

Fuel pump (gear or shaft) is not rotating

Check the fuel pump for shaft rotation and fuel flow. Refer to Procedure 005-016 in the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual, Signature, ISX and QSX15 Engines, Bulletin 3666239.

 

Overhead adjustments are not correct

Measure and adjust the overhead settings. Refer to Procedure 003-004 in the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual, Signature, ISX and QSX15 Engines, Bulletin 3666239.

 

Injector is malfunctioning

Replace the malfunctioning injector. Refer to Refer to Procedure 006-026 in the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual, Signature, ISX and QSX15 Engines, Bulletin 3666239.

 

Internal engine damage

Analyze the oil and inspect the filters to locate an area of probable damage. Refer to Procedure 007-002 in the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual, Signature, ISX and QSX15 Engines, Bulletin 3666239.
