Inspect for Reuse

TOC

Inspect the engine harness connector and the engine position sensor for the following:

  1. Cracked or broken connector shell
  2. Missing or damaged connector seals
  3. Dirt, debris, or moisture in or on the connector pins
  4. Corroded, bent, broken, pushed back, or expanded pins.

Inspect the engine position sensor for the following:

  1. Swollen o-ring
  2. Nicks or cuts in or on the o-ring
  3. Dirt, debris, or damage from contact with the cam gear.

Measure the air gap.

  1. Use a depth micrometer and measure the distance from the face of the gear housing boss to the face of the camshaft gear. The camshaft gear face is the surface between the slots on the gear. Record this as measurement “A.”
  2. Measure the engine position (camshaft) sensor using a depth micrometer and measure the distance from the bottom of the sensor mounting flange to the magnetic tip of the sensor. Record this as measurement “B.”
  3. The air gap can be calculated by subtracting measurements B from A (air gap = A – B). The air gap must be between 0.8 mm and 1.5 mm.
  4. If the air gap is out of specification, check the camshaft end play. Refer to the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual, ISB (4 cylinder) and ISB e (4 and 6 cylinder) Series Engines, Bulletin 4021271.
