Disconnect the engine speed sensor from the engine harness.

Remove the engine speed sensor mounting bolt.

Remove the engine speed sensor by pulling straight back on the mounting adapter.

Inspect for Reuse

Inspect the engine harness connector and the engine speed sensor for the following:

  1. Cracked or broken connector shell
  2. Missing or damaged connector seals
  3. Dirt, debris, or moisture in or on the connector pins
  4. Corroded, bent, broken, pushed back, or expanded pins.

Inspect the engine speed sensor for the following:

  1. Swollen o-ring
  2. Nicks or cuts in or on the o-ring
  3. Dirt, debris, or damage from contact with the crankshaft tone wheel.

Install

TOC

Install the engine speed sensor into the mounting hole, and tighten the mounting bolt.

Torque Value:  8  n.m  [71 in-lb]

Measure the air gap.

  1. Measure the distance from the surface of the crankshaft tone wheel to the magnetic tip of the engine speed (crankshaft) sensor. The air gap

    must be between 0.8 mm and 1.5 mm.

  2. Check this gap at other positions around the tone wheel. The air gap

    must meet specifications around the entire tone wheel edge.

  3. If the air gap is out of specification, check crankshaft end play. Refer to the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual, ISB (4 cylinder) and ISB

    e (4 and 6 cylinder) Series Engines, Bulletin 4021271.

Connect the engine speed sensor to the engine harness. A click will be heard when the connector locks into place.

Run the engine to verify that the repair is complete.
