Overview

Unswitched Battery Circuit SMALL | MEDIUM | LARGE

Circuit Description

The electronic control module (ECM) monitors the battery voltage (unswitched battery power) and logs a fault if the voltage is above or below a calibration-specific value.

Component Location

The alternator is located on the front of the engine and driven by the belt drive.

Shop Talk

• The ECM monitors the battery voltage (unswitched battery power) and logs a fault if the voltage is above or below a calibration-specific value. If the alternator charging capability is adjustable, then it can be adjusted incorrectly (too low or too high). Use the alternator manufacturer’s specifications.
• Check the features and parameters to see if the correct battery system voltage is selected (12-VDC or 24-VDC systems). If this is incorrect, then it can trigger a fault code.
• When the ECM detects this fault, the engine rpm will automatically rise above low idle and remain at the engine speed for up to a minute and then ramp back down to the low-idle setting. This is to increase the alternator speed, which can reset the alternator so that the system can begin to charge correctly.
