Circuit Description
The engine oil temperature sensor monitors engine oil temperature and passes information to the electronic control module (ECM) through the engine harness. If the engine oil temperature becomes too high, it will cause a derate condition. If the Engine Protection Shutdown feature is enabled, the engine will shut down 30 seconds after the red stop lamp starts flashing.
Component Location
The engine oil temperature sensor is located on the intake side of the engine near the EGR crossover tube below the integrated fuel system module (IFSM). Refer to Section E for a detailed component location view.
Shop Talk
The engine oil temperature sensor measures the temperature of the oil in the oil rifle on the left hand side of the engine block. This fault code is activated if the engine oil temperature is above 122°C [252°F].
Possible causes of this fault code include:
- Low oil level
- High coolant temperature
- Failed lubricating oil thermostat
- Failed lubricating oil cooler
- Failed engine oil temperature sensor.
