1999 GM 6.5L V8 – Engine Replacement – Installation Procedure

1. Install the left accessory bracket to the engine block. Refer to Accessory Brackets Replacement (Left Side).

2. Install the right accessory bracket to the engine block. Refer to Accessory Brackets Replacement (Right Side).

3. Install the engine lift bracket to the rear of the right cylinder head.

4. Install J 36857 along with GM P/N 94282217 bolt and GM P/N 15650963 washer to the right rear cylinder head.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Caution and Notices.

Tighten
Tighten the lift bracket bolt to 4 0 N-m (30 Ib ft).

5. Attach a suitable lifting devise to the engine assembly.

6. Remove the engine from the suitable engine stand.

7. Install the flywheel to the engine assembly. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement.

8. Install the clutch assembly (if equipped ) on the flywheel. Refer to Differential Carrier Assembly Replacement in Clutch.

9. Install the engine assembly into the vehicle.

10. Install the left engine mount through bolt. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement (Left Side).

11. Install the right engine mount through bolt. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement (Right Side).

12. Remove the lifting devise from the engine assembly.

13. Remove the engine lift bracket and the bolt and washer, GM P/N 94282217 and GM P/N 15650963 from the cylinder head.

14. Remove the support for the transmission.

15. Raise the vehicle and support the vehicle with safety stands.

16. Reconnect the electrical connector for the block heater.

17. Install the bolts into the torque convertor.

18. Install bolts from the bellhousing to the engine block.

19. Install the starter to the engine block. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement (Diesel, 6.5L) in Engine Electrical.

20. Install the oil filter and adapter 4 wheel drive vehicles only. Refer to Oil Filter Adapter and Valve Assembly Replacement.

Important: Anytime the oil cooler lines are disconnected from the quick connectors or the engine block, the retaining clip must be replaced.

21. Connect the oil cooler lines to the engine block.

22. Install the transmission cooler lines to the retaining brackets.

23. Install the battery ground in the front of the cylinder head.

24. Install the front propeller shaft (4 wheel drive models only).
• For vehicles equipped with the non active transfer case, refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement (Front Axle – All Except NP8) in Driveline/Axle.
• For vehicles equipped with the active transfer case, refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement (Front Axle – NP8) in Driveline/Axle.

25. Install the exhaust pipe to the turbo charger. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Pipe Replacement (Diesel) in Engine Exhaust.

26. Remove the safety and lower the vehicle.

27. Install the generator to the right accessory bracket.
Refer to Generator Replacement (CS 130D) in Engine Electrical.

28. Install the auxiliary generator to the left accessory bracket (if equipped). Refer to Generator Replacement – Auxiliary in Engine Electrical.

29. Install the A/C compressor to the left accessory bracket. Refer to Compressor Replacement (6.5L) in HVAC.

30. Install the power steering lines to the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Hoses Replacement in Power Steering.

31. Install the air conditioning condenser in the vehicle. Refer to Air Condenser Replacement in HVAC.

32. Install the radiator in the vehicle. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.

33. Install the heater hoses from the heater core (non-auxiliary shown).

34. Reconnect the engine wiring harness extension harness assembly at the rear of the left cylinder head.

35. Install the ground straps to the right rear cylinder head. Refer to Ground Strap Replacement in Engine Electrical.

36. Install the ground strap at the rear of each cylinder head.

37. Install the fuel manager/filter from the engine assembly. Refer to Fuel Manager/Filter Replacement in Engine Controls-6.5L.

38. Install the upper intake manifold cover.

39. Connect both the battery negative cables to the batteries. Refer to Battery Cable in Engine Electrical.

40. Refill the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Engine Cooling

41. Recharge the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging in HVAC.

42. Install the hood to the vehicle. Refer to Hood Replacement in Body and Accessories.

43. Install a scan tool and check for any DTC’s.

44. Adjust the timing for the fuel injection pump.
Refer to Injection Timing Adjustment in Engine Controls-6.5 L .

45. Perform TDC offset procedure. Refer to TDC Offset Adjustment in Engine Controls— 6.5L
