1999 GM 6.5L V8 – Engine Replacement – Removal Procedure

1. Remove the hood. Refer to Hood Replacement in Body and Accessories.

2. Disconnect both the battery negative cables from the batteries. Refer to Battery Cable in Engine Electrical.

3. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Engine Cooling.

4. Remove the radiator assembly from the vehicle.
Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.

5. Remove the air conditioning compressor from the vehicle. Refer to Compressor Replacement (6.5L) in HVAC.

6. Remove the air conditioning condenser from the vehicle. Refer to Air Condenser Replacement in HVAC.

7. Remove the generator (single generator) from the accessory bracket. Refer to Generator Replacement (CS 130D) in Engine Electrical.

8. Remove the generator (dual generator) from the accessory bracket. Refer to Generator Replacement – Auxiliary in Engine Electrical.

9. Remove the power steering lines from the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Hoses Replacement in Power Steering.

10. Remove the upper intake manifold cover.

11. Remove the fuel manager/filter from the engine assembly. Refer to Fuel Manager/Filter Replacement in Engine Controls-6.5L.

12. Disconnect the electrical connector for the engine wiring harness extension harness assembly for the fuel injection pump at the cowl.

13. Disconnect the engine wiring harness assembly at the left rear of the engine block.

14. Remove the ground straps from the right rear cylinder head. Refer to Ground Strap Replacement in Engine Electrical.

15. Remove the ground straps at the rear of each cylinder head.

16. Remove the heater hoses from the heater core (non-auxiliary shown).

17. Install the engine lift bracket to the rear of the right cylinder head.

Notice: Refer to Damage May Result From The Use Of An Improper Bolt When… in Cautions and Notices.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Caution and Notices.

18. Install J 36857 along with GM P/N 94282217 bolt and GM P/N 15650963 was her to the right rear cylinder head.

Tighten
Tighten the lift bracket bolt to 4 0 N-m (30 Ib ft).

19. Raise the vehicle and support the vehicle with safety stands.

20. Remove the starter from the engine block. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement (Diesel, 6.5L) in Engine Electrical.

21. Remove the bolts from the torque converter.

22. Remove the exhaust pipe from the turbo charger.
Refer to Exhaust Manifold Pipe Replacement (Diesel) in Engine Exhaust.

23. Remove block heater electrical connection.

24. Remove the battery ground in the front of the engine block.

Important: Anytime the oil cooler lines are disconnected from the quick connectors or the engine block, the retaining clip must be replaced.

25. Disconnect the oil cooler lines from the engine block if equipped. Refer to Engine Oil Cooler Line Replacement in Engine Cooling.

26. Remove the transmission cooler lines from the retaining brackets.

27. Remove the oil filter and adapter 4 wheel drive mode ls only. Refer to Oil Filter Adapter and Valve Assembly Replacement.

28. Remove the front propeller shaft (4 wheel drive mode ls only).
• For vehicles equipped with the non active transfer case, refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement (Front Axle – All Except NP8) in Driveline/Axle.
• For vehicles equipped with the active transfer case, refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement (Front Axle – NP8) in Driveline/Axle.

29. Remove the front differential carrier from the vehicle. Refer to Differential Carrier Assembly Replacement in Front Axle.

30. Remove the bellhousing bolts from the engine block.

31. Remove the safety stands and lower the vehicle.

32. Support the transmission assembly with a suitable support.

33. Attach a suitable lifting devise from the lifting bracket to the A/C mounting bracket.

34. Raise the engine enough to remove the engine mount through bolt.

35. Remove the engine mount bolt to the cross member.

36. Remove the engine from the vehicle.

37. Remove the left accessory bracket from the engine block. Refer to Accessory Brackets Replacement (Left Side).

38. Remove the right accessory bracket from the engine block. Refer to Accessory Brackets Replacement (Right Side).

39. Remove the J 36857 from the right rear cylinder head.

Important: It may be necessary to remove the clutch assembly (if equipped) and flywheel from the engine assembly before the engine can be installed on the suitable engine stand.

40. Remove the clutch assembly from the flywheel.

41. Remove the flywheel from the engine assembly.

42. Install the engine in a suitable engine stand.

43. Remove the lifting devise from the engine.
