Cummins N14 STC, Celect, Celect Plus – Service Manual 001-046   Piston Cooling Nozzle

WARNING  Batteries can emit explosive gases. To reduce the possibility of personal injury, always ventilate the compartment before servicing the batteries. To reduce the possibility of arcing, remove the negative (-) battery cable first and attach the negative (-) battery cable last.

WARNING  To reduce the possibility of personal injury, avoid direct contact of hot oil with your skin.

• Disconnect the batteries. Refer to the OEM service manual.
• Remove the lubricating oil filter. Refer to Procedure 007-013 in Section 7.
• Remove the starting motor (if required). Refer to Procedure 013-020 in Section 13.
• Remove the alternator. Refer to Procedure 013-001 in Section 13.
• Remove the lubricating oil dipstick housing (if required). Refer to Procedure 007-010 in Section 7.

Remove the piston cooling nozzles.

Remove and discard the o-rings.

Clean the piston cooling nozzles with solvent, and dry with compressed air.

Blow out the oil passages with compressed air.

Inspect the piston cooling nozzles for cracks or other damage.

Inspect the screws for damaged threads.

Replace any parts that are damaged.

Use vegetable oil to lubricate the new o-rings. Do

not
soak the new o-rings in engine oil.

Install the o-rings into the groove of the piston cooling nozzle.

CAUTION  Do not use the capscrew to pull the nozzle into the cylinder block. Nozzles and o-ring damage or external oil leaks can result.

Install the nozzles into the cylinder block.

NOTE: Make sure the oil passage opening in the piston cooling nozzle is pointing up toward the piston.

Install the capscrews.

Tighten the Nyloc capscrews.

• Install the lubricating oil dipstick housing (if required). Refer to Procedure 007-010 in Section 7.
• Install the alternator. Refer to Procedure 013-001 in Section 13.
• Install the starting motor (if required). Refer to Procedure 013-020 in Section 13.
• Install the lubricating oil filter. Refer to Procedure 007-013 in Section 7.
• Connect the batteries. Refer to the OEM service manual.
• Operate the engine until it reaches a temperature of 82°C [180°F], and check for oil leaks.
