Cause Correction

Starting procedure is not correct

Verify the correct starting procedure. Refer to Procedure 101-014 (Normal Starting Procedure), in Section 1 of the Operation and Maintenance Manual B3.9, B4.5, and B5.9 Industrial Series Engines, Bulletin 4021389, or Procedure 101-014 (Normal Starting Procedure), in Section 1 of the Operation and Maintenance Manual Automotive, Recreational Vehicle, Bus and Industrial C Series Engines, Bulletin 3810248. Refer to Normal Starting Procedure in the Operation and Maintenance Manual NT 855 Engines, Bulletin 3810238, Operation and Maintenance Manual N14 Engine, Bulletin 3666095, or Procedure 101-014 (Normal Starting Procedure), in Section 1 of the Operation and Maintenance Manual, K38 and K50 Series Engines, Bulletin 3810497.

 

Battery voltage is low, interrupted, or open

Check the batteries connections, unswitched battery supply circuit, and fuses. Refer to Procedure 013-009.

 

Fuel shutoff is malfunctioning

Check for loose wires and verify that the fuel shutoff valve is functioning. Refer to Procedure 005-044.

 

Engine cranking speed is too slow

Check the engine cranking speed with a handheld tachometer or electronic service tool. If the cranking speed is slower than 150 rpm, refer to the Engine Will Not Crank or Cranks Slowly symptom tree in the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual B3.9, B4.5, and B5.9 Series Engines, Bulletin 3666087, Troubleshooting and Repair Manual C Series Engines, Bulletin 3666003, Troubleshooting and Repair Manual NT 855 Engines, Bulletin 3810298, Troubleshooting and Repair Manual N14 Engine, Bulletin 3666142, or the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual, K38 and K50 Series Engines, Bulletin 3810432.

 

Fuel leak

Check the fuel lines, fuel connections, and fuel filters for leaks using the combustible gas detector service tool. Refer to Procedures 005-003.

 

Air intake system restriction is above specification

Inspect the air intake system for restriction. Replace the air filter. Refer to Procedure 010-031 in the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual B3.9, B4.5, and B5.9 Series Engines, Bulletin 3666087, or Procedure 010-031 in the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual C Series Engines, Bulletin 3666003. Refer to Procedure 3-08 in the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual NT 855 Engines, Bulletin 3810298, Procedure 3-04 in the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual N14 Engine, Bulletin 3666142, Procedure 3-08 in the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual K19 Engine, Bulletin 3810307, or Procedure 3-08 in the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual, K38 and K50 Series Engines, Bulletin 3810432.

 

Exhaust system restriction is not within specification

Check the exhaust system for restrictions. Refer to Procedure 011-009 in the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual B3.9, B4.5, and B5.9 Series Engines, Bulletin 3666087, or Procedure 011-009 in the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual C Series Engines, Bulletin 3666003. Refer to Procedure 3-07 in the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual NT 855 Engines, Bulletin 3810298, Procedure 3-05 in the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual N14 Engine, Bulletin 3666095, Procedure 3-09 in the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual K19 Engine, Bulletin 3810307, or Procedure 3-09 in the Troubleshooting and Repair Manual, K38 and K50 Series Engines, Bulletin 3810432.

 

Ignition system is malfunctioning or misfiring

Check the ignition system. Refer to Procedure 013-012, 013-014 or 013-016 and the Ignition System OEM Literature.

 

Moisture in the wiring harness connectors

Dry the connectors with Cummins electronic cleaner, Part Number 3824510.

 

Throttle plate is malfunctioning

Check the throttle plate for sticking. Refer to a Cummins Authorized Repair Facility.
