Cummins N14 STC, Celect, Celect Plus – Service Manual Engine Shuts Off Unexpectedly or Dies During Deceleration

Electronic fault codes active or high counts of inactive fault codes

Refer to Section TF in the CELECT Plus™ Systems Troubleshooting and Repair Manual, Bulletin 3666130, or Section TF in the CELECT™ Systems Troubleshooting and Repair Manual, Bulletin 3666084.

Battery voltage supply to the electronic control module (ECM) is low, interrupted, or open

Check the battery connections, the fuses, and the unswitched battery supply circuit. Refer to Procedure 019-198 and Procedure 019-087 in Section 19 of the CELECT Plus™ Systems Troubleshooting and Repair Manual, Bulletin 3666130, or Procedure 019-198 and Procedure 019-087 in Section 19 of the CELECT™ Systems Troubleshooting and Repair Manual, Bulletin 3666084.

Engine will not restart

Perform a manual start. If engine will not start, refer to the Engine Difficult to Start or Will Not Start troubleshooting symptom tree in Section TS.

Fuel inlet restriction

Check for fuel inlet restriction. Refer to Procedure 006-020 in Section 6.

Air in the fuel system

Check for air in the fuel system. Refer to Procedure 006-003 in Section 6.

Engine idle speed is set too low (mechanical fuel systems)

Adjust the fuel pump idle speed. Refer to Procedure 005-029 in Section 5.

Air intake system restriction

Check the air intake system for restriction. Refer to Procedure 010-031 in Section 10.

Exhaust system restriction

Check the exhaust system for restrictions. Refer to Procedure 011-009 in Section 11.

OEM engine protection system is malfunctioning

Isolate the OEM engine protection system. Follow the OEM service manual instructions to check for a malfunction.

Battery voltage is low

Check the batteries and the unswitched battery supply circuit. Refer to Procedure 019-087 in Section 19 of the CELECT Plus™ Systems Troubleshooting and Repair Manual, Bulletin 3666130, or Procedure 019-087 in Section 19 of the CELECT™ Systems Troubleshooting and Repair Manual, Bulletin 3666084, and the OEM service manual.

Fuel shutoff valve(s) closed (electronically controlled injection)

Check the fuel shutoff valve and circuit. Refer to Procedure 019-049 and Procedure 019-050 in Section 19 of the CELECT Plus™ Systems Troubleshooting and Repair Manual, Bulletin 3666130, or Procedure 019-049 and Procedure 019-050 in Section 19 of the CELECT™ Systems Troubleshooting and Repair Manual, Bulletin 3666084.

Fuel shutoff valve(s) closed (mechanical fuel system)

Use the manual opening knob. Check the shutoff valve and the electrical circuit. Refer to Procedure 005-043 in Section 5. Replace the shutoff valve if necessary.

Fuel pump is malfunctioning

Check the fuel pump output pressure with INSITE™ electronic service tool. Replace the fuel pump, if necessary. Refer to Procedure 005-016 and Procedure 005-031 in Section 5.

Fuel grade is not correct for the application or the fuel quality is poor

Operate the engine from a tank of known high quality fuel. Refer to Fuels for Cummins® Engines, Bulletin 3379001.

Engine brakes are malfunctioning

Check the engine brake operation, adjustment, and solenoid resistance. Repair or adjust as necessary. Refer to Procedure 020-024 in Section 20.

Injector sealing washer is not correct

Remove the injectors and verify the injector sealing washer thickness. Refer to Procedure 006-026 in Section 6.

Injector is malfunctioning (PT/STC)

Remove and check the injectors. Replace injectors as necessary. Refer to Procedure 006-026 in Section 6.

Camshaft end clearance is excessive

Check the camshaft end clearance. Refer to Procedure 001-065 in Section 1.

Static injection timing is not correct

Check the static injection timing. Refer to Procedure 006-025 in Section 6.
